Virtual reality is often described as a way to escape the real world. Yet when used intentionally, it can become a great tool for strengthening our connection to ourselves, our communities, and the people we lead.
Technology can create access to coaching, fitness, meditation, education, and experiences that may otherwise be unavailable because of geography, scheduling, mobility, or other limitations. However, the technology itself does not determine the quality of the experience. The purpose behind it does.

As Dr. Antonio “Coach Doc” Harrison explained on Episode #28 of the PinLeader Podcast, “Technology is not the issue. It’s just the way in which we use it that determines whether or not it’s a positive or negative outcome.”
That distinction is important for leaders. Organizations are rapidly introducing artificial intelligence, virtual environments, automation, and other digital tools into the workplace. But adopting new technology without a clear human purpose can create distance instead of connection. Leaders must ask not only what a tool can do, but also how it will support people, strengthen relationships, and advance the organization’s mission.
Virtual coaching demonstrates what is possible when innovation and human connection work together. A coach may not be physically present, but encouragement, accountability, and a sense of community can still feel deeply personal. Coach Doc describes that relationship as a “two-way street,” explaining that the people receiving his messages also inspire and affect him.
This is a reminder that meaningful leadership is not simply delivered from one person to another. It is created through relationships. Whether people are gathered in a conference room, connected through a video call, or participating through a virtual-reality headset, they want to know that their experiences matter.
Technology can also provide leaders with opportunities to reach people who may see themselves reflected in a coach, mentor, or professional for the first time. Representation can turn innovation into possibility by allowing someone to say, “I can do it too.”
Leading effectively in an evolving digital environment requires more than technical skill. Coach Doc identifies discipline, faith in yourself, and grace as essential leadership qualities. Leaders must be willing to experiment, learn, adjust, and accept that every new approach will not work immediately. As he advises, “Keep what’s useful. Drop what’s useless. Curate your own experience.”
The future of leadership will not require choosing between technology and human connection. It will require using technology to make that connection stronger.
How can your organization embrace new technology while ensuring that people, relationships, and purpose remain at the center?
