Leadership Has No Expiration Date

Too often, leaders convince themselves that growth has an expiration date. We tell ourselves it's too late to learn a new skill, pursue a dream, improve our health, or become the kind of leader we've always hoped to be. But what if the greatest barrier isn't age or ability? What if it's the story we tell ourselves about what's possible?
Leadership is built on the willingness to keep growing. The most effective leaders understand that improvement isn't reserved for the young or the experienced - it's available to anyone willing to take the next step.

That mindset is exactly what Ms. Ernestine Shepherd embodies. Rather than viewing fitness as a destination, she sees it as a lifelong commitment to serving others.
89-year-old Ernestine is a two-time Guinness Book of World Records holder for being the oldest competitive female body builder. As she explained in Episode #27 of the PinLeader Podcast, "I really want to help people to live a healthy, happy, positive, confident lifestyle." Her motivation extends far beyond physical strength; it's about creating hope, confidence, and resilience in the people around her.
One of the most powerful lessons for leaders is that purpose often outlasts obstacles. Ernestine fulfilled a promise she made to her late sister, turning personal grief into a mission that has inspired countless people. Purpose has a remarkable way of carrying us through seasons when motivation alone isn't enough.
Her approach to leadership is equally instructive. She doesn't demand perfection or expect immediate transformation. Instead, she meets people where they are.
"I do not push anyone to do anything," she explains. "We start off walking at least 15 or 20 minutes. Then, as time goes on...that's when I increase things."
Great leaders understand this principle. Sustainable growth rarely comes from overwhelming people. It comes from encouraging steady progress, celebrating small victories, and helping others build confidence one step at a time.
Perhaps most importantly, Ernestine reminds us that success isn't diminished by helping others succeed. Reflecting on mentoring another competitor, she shared the joy she experienced watching someone else achieve professional success. Leadership isn't about being the only one who reaches the finish line - it's about making sure others discover they're capable of crossing it, too.
Whether you're leading a team, an organization, or simply your own personal growth, the challenge remains the same: keep moving forward. As Ernestine says, "As long as I live and as long as I can move, I'm going to help as many people as I can to live that happy, healthy, confident, positive lifestyle."
What dream, goal, or opportunity have you convinced yourself you're "too late" to pursue, and what might happen if you took the first step today?
