Living Generously: How Purpose Builds Stronger Donor Relationships

Generosity is often measured in dollars, but its impact begins long before a financial gift is made. It can take the form of time, expertise, encouragement, introductions, or a willingness to help someone move forward. For leaders and nonprofit organizations, embracing this broader definition of giving can create deeper connections and more sustainable support.

On episode #26 of the PinLeader Podcast, Fundraising Expert and Vice President Shannon Spencer described this mindset simply: “I’m passionate about living generously.” She explains that generosity can include “using your network to lift up someone else,” reminding leaders that their influence is itself a valuable resource. When generosity becomes a way of leading, not merely a transaction, it strengthens communities while creating joy and purpose for the giver.

This same principle should guide fundraising. Spencer emphasizes, “Fundraising is about listening to people and understanding what’s important to them, finding out what their passion is.” Effective fundraising is not about presenting the same appeal to everyone. It is about discovering where a donor’s values intersect with an organization’s mission.

That requires genuine relationships. Donors are more likely to remain committed when they understand the need, trust the organization, and see how their contribution can make a meaningful difference. For major initiatives, confidence is especially important. Leaders must communicate a clear vision and demonstrate that their organization has the ability to carry it out. As Spencer notes, “Fundraising is about building relationships with people.”

Technology can make giving faster and more convenient, but it cannot replace human connection. Digital wallets, personalized appeals, and AI-driven tools may help organizations reach supporters, yet leaders should be careful not to confuse frequent digital contact with a meaningful relationship. Trust is still built through listening, transparency, gratitude, and shared purpose.

This approach matters for organizations of every size. Large institutions may pursue transformational gifts, while smaller nonprofits may rely on loyal supporters, engaged board members, and community advocates. In both cases, the foundation is the same: know your mission, tell its story well, and invite people to participate in a cause that reflects what they care about most.

How can your organization move beyond simply asking for support and create opportunities for people to live generously?
