Making Sense of AI

Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s already embedded in how we live and work. In Episode #9 of the PinLeader Podcast, guest Mr. Greg Walker, a seasoned IT professional with over 25 years of experience, offered a grounded and insightful perspective on what AI really means for leaders today.

Walker describes AI as part of a larger evolution of technology, comparing it to past transformational waves.

“I think this is a third wave, which is AI, which is going to be embedded in practically everything we interact with,” he explains.

From banking chatbots to automated systems and even cybersecurity tools, AI is already shaping everyday experiences—often without people even realizing it.

But with this advancement comes responsibility. Walker emphasizes that while AI has enormous potential to improve efficiency and decision-making, it also introduces new risks.

“What humans have to do is apply these powerful technologies to constructive purpose,” he notes.

Leaders must not only adopt AI but also guide how it is used ethically and strategically.

One key theme from the conversation is balance. AI can assist with tasks like writing emails, analyzing data, or automating customer service—but over-reliance can create vulnerabilities. Walker warns of scenarios where AI could act without human awareness, such as generating unauthorized communications or decisions. This reinforces the need for human oversight and intentional use.

The discussion also highlights the importance of data in shaping AI outcomes.

“AI can only make decisions on the data that's presented,” Walker explains.

This raises critical concerns around bias, especially in areas like healthcare or facial recognition, where incomplete or unrepresentative data can lead to flawed conclusions.

For leaders looking to integrate AI into their organizations, Walker offers practical advice: start with understanding.

“You have to understand first what AI is and what its capabilities are. And then you would apply that to whatever field you're in.”

Whether through books, courses, or hands-on experimentation with tools like ChatGPT, building foundational knowledge is essential. Ultimately, AI is not about replacing human leadership - it’s about enhancing it. The leaders who will thrive in this new era are those who approach AI with curiosity, responsibility, and a clear sense of purpose. By doing so, they can harness its power not just to increase efficiency, but to create smarter, more ethical, and more impactful organizations.

Presented by ROAR Productions. The PinLeader™ Podcast is an interview format show that provides effective tips to those that are currently leaders or have a desire to become leaders. A new episode is released every Wednesday.
