Working Skills for Life

Updated: Apr 25

Leaders seeking workers in skilled labor areas do well when they find partners who train to meet their needs. In Episode #8 of the PinLeader Podcast, Stephanie Boutte, President of Ternion Training and Education Centers, shared a powerful perspective on workforce development and what it truly takes to prepare individuals for lifelong success. Drawing on more than 26 years of experience, Boutte emphasized that the goal is not just employment, but self-sufficiency.

Redefining Workforce Success

“One of the things that I focus on is self-sufficiency,” she explained. “People that don’t have to rely on food stamps… or two, three jobs to just make ends meet.”

Boutte’s approach challenges traditional workforce models by prioritizing careers that provide stability, growth, and dignity - not just immediate job placement.

Training for High-Demand, High-Impact Careers

Boutte aligns her programs with industries that offer real opportunity. In areas like Toledo, she highlighted construction, fiber optics, and healthcare as key pathways. But she is selective.

“I have a problem with offering a minimum wage training,” she said, underscoring her commitment to long-term career mobility over short-term fixes.

Her focus ensures that students are not just employed—but positioned to advance.

Beyond Skills: Building Confidence and Capability

These programs go beyond technical training. Students learn communication, professionalism, and financial literacy - skills that often determine long-term success.

“We teach them how to properly communicate… how to use Word… how to look people in the eye,” Boutte shared.

This holistic approach transforms not only job readiness, but self-confidence.

Creating Generational Impact

Boutte’s work is rooted in serving “underestimated” communities. Her programs have placed hundreds into jobs, generating millions in economic impact and breaking cycles of poverty.

By focusing on individuals often left out of traditional systems, she is helping reshape entire communities.

Leadership Grounded in Purpose

For Boutte, leadership is deeply personal. “My challenges always make me focus on why I started… I always go back to the students,” she said.

Her message is clear: when leaders invest in people holistically, they don’t just fill workforce gaps... they create lasting change.
